Beach Rose Part 2: Beach Rose Honey

Posted by Jade Alicandro Mace on Thursday, August 7, 2014,
Making medicine with Beach Rose (Rosa rugosa) is just the best….the alluring smells of the flowers and the sea, the velvet-soft petals, the ocean wind, and sharp reminders from her thorns reminding us of the dual nature/ both-and nature of things. In beauty there is fierceness. Rose can really give us the strength to put up appropriate boundaries while keeping a soft and open heart, such an important reminder.

Beach Rose Part 1: An Ally for Heartsick Times

Posted by Jade Alicandro Mace on Wednesday, July 30, 2014,
Summer. To me this means sand castles and seagulls, swim holes and wild blueberries, sun tea and harvest baskets over-flowing, and flowers…always flowers. Growing up in New England and spending time every summer on Cape Cod means one flower in particular stands out in my memories as the essence of summer- the Beach Rose aka Rosa rugosa.

Native to the shorelines of Japan, Northeast China, and Korea, Rosa rugosa was first introduced to Europe around the 1770’s.  The date of its int...

Eat Your Weeds!

Posted by Jade Alicandro Mace on Wednesday, April 16, 2014,
The spring truly is the best time to eat the wild weeds.

There are a number of medicinal herbs that can be eaten as spring greens this time of year when their leaves are young and tender, and definitely contain the wild energy of spring.   In addition, not surprisingly, these plants all tend to be nutritional powerhouses incredibly rich in trace vitamins and minerals, strengthen our digestion and elimination, and are supportive to the lymphatic system and the role it plays in detoxifying o...

Kichari Cleanse for Spring Balance

Posted by Jade Alicandro Mace on Thursday, April 3, 2014,
Thinking about a spring cleanse?

Fasting on kichari, a combination of white basmati rice and mung beans slowly cooked together,  makes for a wonderful and nutrative cleanse that is also delicious. Ideally one should prep for the cleanse for 2-3 days by cutting out heavy and inflammatory foods like dairy, red meat, wheat and sugar, although this step is just optional. Next eat just kichari for 5-7 days, and during this time try to avoid caffeine, alcohol, etc. You might be surprised how much .....

Winter Tree Medicine

Posted by Jade Alicandro Mace on Monday, January 20, 2014,

I love working with the evergreens this time of year...they just seem to beckon. That sole greenery on the landscape that reminds me of the verdant abundance to come, and also of the strong medicine these trees have to offer.  I love that even in the dead of winter I can head outside with my harvesting gear and gather these healing herbs for medicine right outside my door.

The Trees

Some of my favorite evergreens to work with are the Pine Family (Pinaceae) members-

  • Eastern White Pine (Pinus str...

The Winter Herbal Medicine Cabinet

Posted by Jade Alicandro Mace on Tuesday, December 3, 2013,

This time of year I often find myself rifling through the cabinets looking for just the right herbs and ingredients to brew up a tea, tincture or syrup for myself or one of my ailing family members.  If only, I thought,  I had a master list of all the essential ingredients to have on hand during these chilly and cold & flu-filled wintry months!...

Here’s a sampling of what I came up with:

Fresh Ginger Rt- a potent anti-microbial (fights viruses and  bacteria) herb, great ...

We've had a great growing season here at Milk & Honey Herbs- it was our first year providing the community with potent, live medicinal plants!  Our plant list is growing every day and we look forward to another exciting year of growth for the nursery in 2014.  We've still got some plants available and will start accepting orders for spring of 2014 in the winter.  In the meantime, it's always fun to indulge in pictures of medicine and flowers!

It all starts so innocently in the spring....
